VILLA Le Agavi is located on the slope of a hill with the beautiful sea in front and at the back the top of the hill that houses Scarlino: a small medieval village full of historical testimonies.
The town is dominated by the Rocca (x sec.) from which you can enjoy a wide panorama of the Gulf of Follonica and the Tuscan Archipelago where the Island of Elba stands out, easily accessible with daily excursions.
Walking through the alleys of the village you can see the Romanesque Church with inside a wooden crucifix of the Renaissance, the Church of San Donato that houses frescoes found in houses in the historic center and the monument to Giuseppe Garibaldi in memory of his overnight stay on September 1, 1849 in the residence of the Scarlinese Angelo Guelfi, before fleeing to Venice after the defeat of the Roman Republic.
The most important and most characteristic event in the country is La festa delle Carriere (August 19) which has religious origins and evokes a miraculous event that took place around 1855, when a cholera epidemic suddenly ended, and the fact was attributed by the devout people to a supernatural intervention. The feast begins with the historical procession: a set of velvets and brocades, ladies, captains, gonfalonieri and pages, as in a fairy tale. The procession heads to the square adjacent to the Castle, and there takes place the challenge between the Archers of the three Contrade (Centro, San Donato and Rocca). Afterwards the inhabitants of each district compete in a series of races that last throughout the day (from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm). Every street of the village becomes a theater where the contradaioli mimano and act. The visitor will then be projected in a fantastic dimension of historical re-enactment and for a day he will think of living in the 1800s.
But Scarlino is not only hill and art: its territory extends to the sea whose coast, 13 km long, offers a variety and beauty truly worthy of note. Crystal clear sea, beautiful seabed, clear and fine coral sand, evergreen Mediterranean scrub that reaches the beach … this is the magnificent spectacle of the southern part of the Scarlet coast.
